Firefox
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on June 14th, 2017 @ 5:48PM

It just sucks so bad now. They keep disabling my add-ons then saying they don't verify. Who are they to determine what is approved or not. LAME. The other day they did an update and it lost ALL my bookmarks of whatever, 10+ years.

It sounds like it couldn't load your profile for whatever reason so it created a new one for you. It doesn't necessarily mean you've lost your bookmarks though. Maybe this page will help you:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

And if you can find/load a previous profile and the bookmarks are still missing, navigate to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Restore > select a desired restore date.

If you do find your bookmarks then for the love of Jebus navigate to Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML..

Now you'll have all your bookmarks saved in one convenient file that you can import into any browser of your choice. Save this file to wherever you keep a backup of your important files/documents.

BiVRiP is the real mvp.

He didn't bitch about how terrible firefox is. He didn't counter and say how great it is.

He gave you a real world solution to your obviously terribly annoying problem.

That being said, firefox has been sucking ass for me as well for the last year. It offered to "sync all my bookmarks" for convenience and I ended up saving all my XXX stuff to my work computer.

LinkedIn 2012 Breach Update
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on May 27th, 2016 @ 12:07PM

LinkedIn recently shared that their breach in 2012 was more extensive than initially thought, having resulted in the theft of 117 million users’ login credentials. These credentials have been found for sale on the black market, so we suggest you change your password, enable two-factor authentication on your LinkedIn account, and update your password on any services that used the same credentials as LinkedIn. We should all be vigilant about securing our information, so take the following precautions to keep yourself safe from potential compromises:

  • • Try to use a different password for every service
  • • Use a password manager (we recommend LastPass) to keep track of your credentials
  • • Only use passwords that contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters
  • o You can even use the LastPass password generator to create secure passwords.
  • • Change your passwords regularly. Your password shouldn’t be so old that it has its own five-year sword!
  • • Enable two-factor authentication for all services that offer it

FCC adopts historic Internet rules
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on February 27th, 2015 @ 8:47AM

One thing we know is the gov fucks up everything they touch. And if Obama is saying hey great job everyone, you know something must be wrong with it.

I think people see this as awesome, we're free from the rule of the corporations, which is good except that the gov might be even worse than them.

i think cuban is doing the chicken little thing over the fcc now possibly being able to regulate the internet.

they regulate phones yet you can still call sex lines, right?

and they'd only be able to regulate american based websites as far as content, and we've seen with pirate bay and other sites that they can just move countries to avoid regulation

THE INTERNET IS F-ED
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on February 26th, 2014 @ 9:10AM

The Verge

Massive companies like AT&T and Comcast have spent the first two months of 2014 boldly announcing plans to close and control the internet through additional fees, pay-to-play schemes, and sheer brutal size — all while the legal rules designed to protect against these kinds of abuses were struck down in court for basically making too much sense.

Big reason to vote democrat...they are in general more pro-net-neutrality and realize that the internet is a vital infrastructure, at least as much so as roads and bridges. Republicans tend to still think the internet should be left to private feudal lord corporations charging the peasants to live on their land.

Note on YOUR Life
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on January 22nd, 2014 @ 10:45AM

Don't waste your time spending a lot of time reading about sad news stories. Some people do it because they think they can somehow prevent whatever horrible things happen to other people but in reality, there's little you can do and the stories are unlikely to have any effect on your life unless you let them. Stories like that only get you down. People sit there watching the news every night to see who died, or focus on the fucked up story of the dead.

What do some old people do? Sit there reading the obituaries. In today's world, people use the internet for that, long before they're even old.

There's billions of people in the world and people are going to be dying all the time. There's always going to be fucked up stories since the beginning of time. You don't need to involve yourself if you don't have to.

The happy people are those that never read the news or follow politics.

Instead I recommend finding the BEST of the internet which is humor or other entertainment that is not about negative things in the world. Reddit is a good source for that. You can find sub-reddits that have your interests to add to your news feed such as turtles, pretty earth pictures etc. That will make you a much more positive person instead of a downer.

That's why I often don't cover whoever was murdered lately or the current missing white woman/girl.

Amen to that!
I'll take cats playing the piano any day.

keepersmith
- 2014-01-21 18:55:14

I am totally on board with this. I recently had one of those lightbulb moments and had some ideas along a similar line of thought. I realized that how we perceive the world can directly affect how happy we are. We have some control over that perception via deciding what to think about at any given time.

I heard some theories about how the brain works that compared the brain with an ant colony that helps me explain it. When ants find food away from the colony, they lay down a chemical scent on the way back. Other ants follow that chemical trail and when they find the food, they reinforce it. That makes even more ants choose that trail as the scent gets stronger. When the food is all consumed, they don't lay the scent anymore and it slowly gets weaker till no more ants go down that path. I like to think of neural pathways working in a similar manner.

If we keep generally positive thoughts floating around in our heads, those pathways and chemical mixtures get reinforced. The theory is that eventually that will become the easiest path and will eventually be your default state of mind, or at least the easiest one to achieve. That should lead to being generically happier as a result.

I spent quite a bit of time being outraged about things happening in the political arena. Every time I read about the government or big companies looking to curtail internet freedom I couldn't help but feel enraged. I am not a political activist so getting all flustered about it isn't going to change anything. I decided to actively change my perception and stop looking for those sort of stories. When I stumble on them now, I can't help but read them still. The difference is that I actively choose to think about something else so I don't dwell on it and get too angry. That is just one example but I am sure you get the idea.

It is somewhat difficult to be addicted to the internet and to stick to generally positive stuff, but it is good to avoid what you can. I try to avoid the things I know will piss me off too much.

I have only been thinking along these lines for about 6-8 months or so. It is difficult to judge but I would say I have been happier in general. I started out fairly happy though so it isn't like it is a night and day difference. It could be an incorrect theory or even just the placebo effect. In the end I can't see how it could hurt so I have been sticking with it.

Tapar
- 2014-01-21 19:21:33

When I first opened a facebook account back in 2007, I complained a lot and shared bad news stories because that's what my friends were doing. I realized that I hated the whining and I hated doing it. So I decided to share mostly good or humorous stuff. The occasional news stories that I share are important to me and there is likely some way to make a difference (either by donating, changing a habit, etc) - it's not just bad news. I think I'm a happier person overall.

I have about 2000 friends, most like me because I make them smile, laugh or they like my photography. I try not to let them down by posting negative stuff.
