Gopro?
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on May 18th, 2016 @ 2:42PM

Update: OK i returned it.

Is there any real reason for a Gopro? I have a Hero 4 Silver for a month now and it seems completely pointless. Every video I make is not exciting. About the only use I can think of is put it on my car and make driving videos. Thoughts? I'm thinking of returning it.

I'm thinking of just getting a dashcam instead.

Maybe try doing something exciting.

Maybe get a mount for your bike?

I thought about that but I think biking videos would be boring too.

i agree with your intuition in that i probably wouldn't watch a biking video... unless it was falling off a bike, or crashing a bike into something.

Its funny you say this - I just convinced another friend to buy a new GoPro 4 this week. I got my GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition when it first came out - at a time when there was no 4K video available on a cell phone, a point-and-shoot camera or on any consumer-grade camcorder - the only DSLR that shot 4K at the time was the $15K Canon 1DC - a camera with no auto-focus capability while shooting in video.

I bought the GoPro - not because of the 4K actually - but because I was looking for something fundamentally different for video recording. Ideally, I was looking for a single solution for photos and video - but like I said, most DSLRs do not have auto-focus for video (they are only starting in this direction now with the Canon 1DX Mark II which has Dual Assist AF and allows a person to easily find focus using their touchscreen viewfinder).

I did not want to buy a video camcorder, as these were generally going out-of-fashion, and my old one was still fairly big and bulky. I had also considered buying a smaller camera such as a Sony NEX dedicated for video - but again I'd have the same focusing issues and also be stuck with two cameras.

So I went with the GoPro - predominantly because it was different in its design - extremely small - and that it was very extremely rugged in use. I can basically give it to my 3 year old and she can through it around and it will still be good to go - you can't do things with DSLRs that you can do with a GoPro.

That said, now that cell phones have 4K capability, the advantages of GoPro are less so - I would still prefer the fact that the GoPro is much more discrete vs a cell phone. There are certainly disadvantages - including the fact that you always have that wide-angle perspective (which is also an advantage), and that the system in general is extremely utilitarian - at $600+ which is what I spent when the GoPro 4 first came out, all you get is the camera and the waterproof cases. Necessary attachments like the 3-way handle and LCD screen are separate expenses, and I do not recommend using a cell phone as the LCD as it kills the battery quite quickly.

I noticed you did get the Silver edition which has the integrated LCD but it also lacks the ability to record 4K at any decent speeds - I believe the max was 15 fps for 4K, which is kinda useless for most applications. Best option would be to return it for a Hero 4 Black which can be much more versatile.

As far as what to use a GoPro for, I use mine for everything video - I think that is a common misconception that a GoPro is purely for action video - I really disagree. GoPro's size and ruggedness put it at an advantage compared to other recorders and it can essentially be used for just about anything.

That said, I would also consider waiting for the next GoPro, which is rumoured to be 8K resolution - so basically just like the Hero 4, the next GoPro model (Hero 5?) will have capabilities that no other device will be able to perform at a very reasonable cost.

Security Cameras
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on April 18th, 2016 @ 2:16PM

I've wanted security cams on my place my whole life but I've never been able to afford it (cuz of the cruises). Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on them? Would you want to go with some service, or buy some crap at Costco and pay to install it or what.

I'm NOT talking about some hidden camera setup, just regular ones.

I don't have much input on cameras themselves, but if you didn't already see, there was a report that some amazon cameras come with malware: http://www.zdnet.com/article/amazon-surveillance-cameras-infected-with-malware/

My friend at work setup all the camera systems in our stores (5 locations, 12+ cameras each.) and at his house.

The software he uses is Blue Iris. http://blueirissoftware.com/ Looks like it's $60 full version. He can bring up the camera's on his phone or on a remote computer.

He uses cameras that can use POE (Power Over Ethernet) and a Switch that can support the same. That way you only have to run the ethernet cable, no power. I THINK these are the camera's we use:http://www.amazon.com/Amcrest-Outdoor-Bullet-Security-Camera/dp/B01BN1FDUG/

You'll also need a computer to run it on that remains on all the time and has decent storage. (6TB+?)

10 Camera's: $900 (the one's I linked)
Software: $60
Cat5e Cable: $100? (1000 feet?)
POE Switch: $75-250

Computer Storage:$100-200 (3-6TB)
Rest of computer: ??? Depends on what it needs and if you can dual purpose a computer for it.

Installation and troubleshooting: Priceless.

You could easily spend $2000 this way. Can't imagine that store bought and installed would be any cheaper though, and then you have to deal with someone elses standard of quality.

Fun fact: the iBot wheel chairs was invented by Dean Kamen at DEKA, which was the precursor for inventing the Segway, which utilizes similar technology.

Unfortunately the iBot was discontinued in 2009 due to high costs, partly due to FDA regulations.
