Home Repairs
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on April 16th, 2018 @ 3:12PM

Finally got our dishwasher installed Saturday. It's insanely quiet. You can't even tell it's on. I got it for like $510 at costco.com installed/delivered and they hauled the old one away. It did not fit. There was a board holding up the countertop behind it blocking it. We had to remove it and get a smaller one. The plug behind it was also blocking it so we had to send the cord over below the sink. But now I created a crazy dangerous situation where I have to use a wifi plug to get the garbage disposal to work until we get someone to rewire the switch to only turn on for one plug. haha. I set it off at my computer then realized that we should probably be in the same room when we tried that, hahahaha.

If you find your dishwasher crazy loud, I'd recommend upgrading. Now you don't even know if it's going. haha. Also it was so loud my daughter's room could really hear it but now she can't.

I never fix anything. Well we managed to replace the kitchen faucet using youtube and a video on the faucet instructions. The only problem was the nut underneath had rusted together so we had to hacksaw the top off to get it out.

Then I managed to remove my dish washer. Took forever. We got a new dish washer today but it doesn't quite fit so we're going to mess around and see if we can get it in properly. Also the line to the dish washer is leaking at the faucet. Before it was fine as long as the cable was hooked up.

Youtube really helps in repairs. haha.

You're not kidding about YouTube being a Godsend for homeowners. I have a new found respect for my Dad thinking back on all his home improvement projects in the 1980s. Without YouTube, I'd be clueless.

Whole House Fan
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on November 8th, 2016 @ 7:18PM

For 8 years I've suffered where the inside of my house is like 80+ and outside it's like 60/50. It's insane. Right now it's 57 and inside it's 80. I spent $700 one year on a Solar Attic fan and it did jack shit to fix the problem.

I think the solution, which my dad for years has said is a WHOLE HOUSE FAN. Looks like Only $1200-$1600 installed.

I'd bet anything that your dad is right and it would make a huge difference.

- 2016-11-08 19:26:12

I had one when I lived in CO. It was so-so. Humidity wasn't a problem there, is it an issue where you live? I didn't like leaving windows on the bottom floor open (physical security). I think it's worth a shot if you weigh the pros and cons. The operating costs are very low compared to AC.

- 2016-11-08 19:27:47

I have whole house fan and it really does a very nice job when you have such a temperature imbalance like that. You need to mess around with which windows you keep open and which ones you close (always keep at least one window open of course.) It gets to be a little like a game but it really is nice for those days when your house gets heat soaked during the day and the outside air cools way off at night.

I know several people in socal who have them and they're very happy with them. I think you'll like it. I'd get one if I had an attic.

Replaced a sliding screen door
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on October 24th, 2016 @ 5:53PM

My new black cat is a fucking asshole. It goes up to the screen door, and starts clawing a hole in it. Then it made a huge hole. And it keeps opening the sliding door and escape. Sadly that's how the last cat we had got it and we were too lazy to figure out how to stop it. So.

I went and spent $18 on some anti-pet screen. I used a youtube video to figure out how to replace it. It was pretty simple. I did a sloppy job but every job I do is sloppy when it's the first time. I still didn't find out how to do a lock for the screen because the problem is the screen door doesn't have a hole/latch area carved out of it. So the only way to lock it would be something on the outside or inside. I did see that one suggestion was a $19 baby proofing connector thing. So I'm going to see if they're still able to open it. So far they aren't with the new screen.

Of course the first thing Peg Bundy tells me is. "That looks ghetto."

The next thing the cat fucked up. Starting to be as bad as the bunnies is it tried to climb behind my fish tank and it pulled down my NEW $10 turtle lamp. I was able to get a return on amazon for it despite the return date being out of the window. They rule with that if you contact them via live chat.

HOAs are the worst. Never get one if you can help it.

They're repaving our area for 3 days and want everyone to have their cars gone from 8am - 4pm those 3 days. Only there's nowhere else around to park. There's the "fire lane" driveways that they say they'll charge us $100 if we're caught there. I think I'll try to take my car to work. Our van is screwed though.

F-ing HOAs
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on June 26th, 2013 @ 1:39AM

These assholes, after 5 years have decided to start caring about people parking in front of their garages and have imposed a new $100 first violation, $200 second violation fine. The Police are charging $25, so how bullshit is that? I asked what if I don't pay and my lady says they can get the money from the escrow.

Then for the enforcement, they're just doing by word of mouth. They're not even using the security guy to write tickets and put them on people's cars. They can't even prove you were there cuz they're not even noting the car or the license plate or anything. If anyone happens to park in front of your garage, YOU get hit for it. Fucking fucktard idiots. Next time there's a vote for board members, I'm voting them all out.

Also, The old piece of shit neighbor down the street made 2 false reports on us to try to get us in trouble. The days he claimed we were parked there 8 hours, we weren't even there. W e got a new admin for the HOA and he saw that as his chance to whine and complain to a new person. Everyone's counting the days until that piece of shit dies. He's 60, so it could be another 20 years. For some reason he was mad at the previous neighbors who recognized him for the sack of shit he is, and he's carrying that grudge over to us who moved in afterwards. But he's a bitch to little kids too. He goes around scaring little kids.

Original Last Post

When is the next election?
The sooner you start your anti-HOA campaign to vote them out the sooner it sends a message to get their crap together. Do you have a driveway? Parking in front of your garage should NOT be a crime.

Homeowners Insurance
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 19th, 2012 @ 10:42AM

We discovered due to the high rate of our Homeowners Insurance, they pretty much overcharged us by about $3,000 over 4 years. So my warning to you is make sure you're getting a good rate. We found it over AAA for 1/2 off.

Ouch. I'm paying ~$500/year for my homeowners insurance. Nothing is cheap in California evidently.

- 2012-12-19 12:12:57

Ain't that the truth Charkoth, lol.

There was actually a very interesting study that came out from Consumer Reports that essentially said the longer you stay with banks, insurance companies or basically anything service related, the more they tend to screw you over.

I know bouncing back between Progressive and Geico over the years, I've gotten my car insurance down to $25/mo. Every 6 months before I renew, I always check what the other guy will offer me rate wise.

- 2012-12-19 12:16:43

I've been with Allstate and Fifth third bank my whole life. I get so many discounts from having multiple accounts with both (car and home with Allstate and Mortgage and Banking with Fifth Third) that switching rarely would save me money.

With Allstate a few years ago I was telling them I was thinking about switching when they offered me a much better coverage for my auto on a "new" plan they were offering for less per month. I was down to $100/month for 3 cars and 2 drivers until my wife's recent accident, and that includes all new cars and a GT500. Even after an accident the discounts are such that it is still only $130 a month which isn't bad to cover full coverage on about 100K in cars.

I'll say that many people just see a bill and pay it and never question increases etc or never try to get a better deal. If you don't ask you won't get it. I don't know of ANY company who will give you a discount on their services without asking first.

This is why there are still 3 million people paying for AOL Dialup who don't even use it and don't know there is a free version of AOL they can use with their broadband access.

Attic Fan
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on August 17th, 2012 @ 12:13AM

We put a Solar Attic Fan in for $800. I'm supposed to get $300 back in taxes. But they guys did such a shitty job. 1 hour to put it in. He cracked 4-5 tiles. He left this part sticking out that he just painted the same color as the roof. He painted 4 tiles instead of laying some paper down. He left all his nails up there. He broke one tile and now the roof is exposed. So MLady is calling them up demanding they come out and fix it. We even think they took 4 of our tiles and drove away. We gave them 4 good ones to replace bad ones and they didn't replace any yet the tiles are gone.

So far I notice no change in the temp of the house but I crawled up there and it is sucking hot air out.

I've been burned once or twice with home contractors and learned a very important lesson. NEVER pay a contractor until the job is completed and you're happy with it. That way if they do a shoddy job you have a leg to stand on when demanding they fix it. If they insist on payment up front, compromise for half price with full payment to come when you sign off on the quality.

- 2012-08-17 06:02:06

any decent contractor (at least where i live) will take an instalment plan for paying, usually at agreed benchmarks, some money for materials to start off and then as they progress 20-30% here and there until the final payment is made after everything is done

Electronic Door Lock
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on March 24th, 2012 @ 10:54PM

Update: My dad helped me install it today and it's totally awesome! Remote door opening! It doesn't open the door for you but it unlocks it.

Original Post
As you might know, I've wanted these forever. Then I saw one with remote door locks at Costco. I used my bar code scanner. Then a week later, I looked it up in the history, had my phone forward it to my email. Then looked up the site on my computer. Now that's the future.

I looked up pricing and Costco has it for $80-100 less than anyone else. I got all excited about getting it and I just happened to have a rebate check from Amex for the same price as the lock. $150. So I went last night to get it. I tried to install it but the hole for the latch needs to be slightly bigger. So I got all disappointed. My chick wouldn't help me with the tools. So I'm hoping to install it by the end of the weekend. Then you can either use a code or remote door locks to get in. You can give your kid a code so he can get in. You can give neighbors the code when they're taking care of your pets then remove the code afterwards. Awesome stuff! That's where I feel like we're living in the future. Cuz my car certainly never gets more futuristic (10 years old next year).

I want one of these

We have one of these at the rental house and it's really cool. I've been looking for something to wash the car at night or use outside the garage at night. They sell the plastic ones for about $50 but I think I need a metal one. The metal ones seem to be about $200 which is kinda expensive for washing your car.

I want one of these bad. You just put in a combo and it's deadbolt lock for your front door (or whatever) OR a regular key lock. They are expensive tho, $170-$200. Totally worth it!

I want a second one (below) for the gate.

I Changed a Lightbulb!
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on March 2nd, 2011 @ 6:33PM

While people are reading about real life issues, on this site you can read about the most boring things possible! My garage has two Florescent Lights. The 8 foot long ones like you see in businesses or schools. Well one went out and the other was barely on. So I noted the numbers on it. Used the web to confirm the stats. I went to Lowes and they didn't have the same brand but I was able to get another one. I got "Cool white" instead of "Sunlight" which the guy said is all ORANGE. F that. They are so long they barely fit in the Honda Van. It was also hard getting them from the street into the garage without dropping them! I was able to replace them pretty easy but the only problem is one of them starts to flicker for some reason. I tried rotating it but it didn't really solve the problem. I'm hoping it "burns in" or something and it stops doing that. Otherwise maybe it's a general electrical problem. They lasted 2 years before having a problem.

It sure feels nice when you can actually fix something on your house. I suck at that kind of thing. I also replaced the air filter on my AIR/Heat. It says replace them every 3 months but I did it 2 years. I bet that's too long. But they're expensive!

jd beat me to it. Generally, these things are pretty easy to troubleshoot. It's either the light, the ballast, or the starter. Since it turns on, it's not the starter. You just replaced the light, so it's probably the ballast.

Fun trick to play on someone: remove the starter from the fluorescent lights in their office (cylindrical silver thing, usually). The light will stay on, but once turned off will stay off.
