Still on Windows 7
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on January 20th, 2017 @ 1:05AM

Still living my life on Windows 7. Forget Windows 10. Am I missing anything? haha.

Coming from a former anti-Win10 guy, I finally made the switch not too long ago. I felt the OS had matured enough and MS brought back enough of the traditional functionality of the START menu that I was willing to give it a shot. That and the use of a 3rd party tool like Spybot Anti-Beacon (for those concerned about their privacy and MS over-reaching in its data collection).

After a few weeks of use I can honestly say the experience has been positive. The new Task Manager is nice, the FileCopy process is definitely better than all previous versions of Windows combined (no more relying on 3rd party software like TeraCopy). Edge has replaced Internet Explorer so there's a case to be made on that alone that security is better - but kind of moot if you're already using Chrome or Firefox.

But I have to say the one feature that really surprised me were the Windows Updates. They're seamless and I only have to reboot my machine every other week if less. That's a far cry from Windows 7 where even a minor MS Word update forced a reboot.

To answer your question though, there is really nothing there in 10 that can't be achieved in 7. Basically if it works for you, there's really no compelling reason to pay the premium to switch.

Edit: spelling cleanup

I downgraded from Windows 10 to 7 after the, "Anniversary Update".

After the update I was getting constant BSODs. I think it was because I have an older raid controller.

I also couldn`t stand the forced windows updates. Its way too pushy. Sometimes the Windows Update driver isn`t the best solution and can break your computer.

Every 30 minutes, Windows 10 sends all typed text to Microsoft. GoboLinux is the way to go.

Got the computer running
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on May 2nd, 2016 @ 3:25PM

5/2/2016 - So after getting the computer running, it only has a 465 or so gig drive so I tried to get the 2nd drive going again, but I managed to mess with the data on the drive and wipe everything out. So I had to go back to installing everything again which seems to take a while 1/2 a day. Now I'm back in action a second time but I still can't get the 4 hard drive STA slots to work or get the 2nd or 3rd drive or 2nd cdrom to show up. This thing is hard to work with but it has great stats and is super fast.

4/29/2016 Finally got the computer going. The answer was... I was doing things in pairs. I was always connecting both hard drives and both cdroms. Instead I split them up and kept one dvd rom and one hard drive. That finally made one hard drive show up during the Windows 7 installation and I was back in action.

Found 2 Computers in the Bushes
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on April 9th, 2016 @ 3:46PM

Update: Mystery solved. Computer #2, was a Church computer from 2007, of one of the 3 churches. I emailed them and dropped both computers back on their front door.

It only happens to me because Ingress OR Metal Detecting. This time the 2 computers were in a church parking lot, in the bushes. They were not really NEAR any of the churches, where someone might put them if they were donating them to the church. It was almost as if, someone was doing some exchange or something. Next to them was a keyboard, and some other bag I didn't check. I'll check the bag next time I go by.

I opened up one of them. It's a Dell from 2009 running XP. I had no video card. I took the hard drive and mounted it. They had deleted everything but a few bookmarks and about 10 things they scanned for their mortage. But that was enough. Just searching their name I got their full names, their VIN on their 2009 car. A letter to the mortgage company saying they couldn't pay their mortgage. The lesson here is, DESTROY YOUR HARD DRIVE. Files aren't really deleted. I'm not sure why this computer is in the bushes. They sat there at least 2 days in the rain, before I took them home. I ran a data recovery thing on it and dug up all the movies they had downloaded from 2009. Hilarious. I ran a virus scanner on their drive and found 120+ Virus and one photo. I also found they played Counterstrike Condition Zero. I found like 30 movies they had illegally downloaded on uttorent.

Computer 2, is also a Dell and seems to have everything to work. But DVI yuck. I pulled a 160 GB hard drive.

Does your town now require electronic to be taking to a recycling center or landfill. Where I live, sanitation will not haul Pcs away anymore, so someone may have just ditched them.

The Auto-updating is total BS. I completely disabled windows update so it wouldn't do that to me. If M$ is gonna force this crap on us, i think it is time to start using linux. I'd have jumped long ago if more gaming companies supported Linux.

Ransomware
Posted by: m0rb0 on December 14th, 2015 @ 12:45PM

So my gf got hit with a version of CryptoLocker. It literally took all of 3 minutes for the payload to download and start encrypting her files. Her biggest problem? She was running Windows XP. Her other problem? Her McAfee AV expired, and in 3 minutes - her PC was infected. They want $500 (in bitcoin) to decrypt the files. I told her to not even consider paying it, since it was just an 'Internet' machine-not her main PC. If it was her main computer, I'd be freaking out with her.

As a former IT guy I can tell you unequivocally that people will click and run just about anything that crosses their path. It doesn't matter how locked down the system is, how much training you give them, and how many "watch out for these" types of alerts you send out. A large majority simply do not know how to use email/internet.

We had one user at work who managed to propagate a version of CryptoLocker over a small segment of the network. That was a fun day.

Got a new computer
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 14th, 2015 @ 10:43AM

I just bought a new one last year but my friend gave me a new computer. I don't have the stats at the moment but it's a Dell Workstation. 770 GTX (I currently have a GTX 970). It seems to have (2) SSDs that are 450gb. It doesn't look very expandable beyond the ram. No room for more hard drives or a 2nd video card. But the stats on the CPU are better than mine. I think we're going to swap it for Rapidkill (my kid's) computer and use that 3rd computer for MBacon on the TV.

  • 2 SSDs, 500gig
  • GTX 770 - I already have a GTX 970 if I wanted to swap
  • Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 @ 2.40GHz

Looks fine if it is just for a nephew.

However, I would NEVER go back to HDD when SSD are so much better for operating systems and well... everything. Even now what I paid for a 120gb last august can get you a 250gb easily. If you need a Terabyte for Storage, get an external and that way you can move that storage around (steam games, movies, music etc...)

Windows 10
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on August 4th, 2015 @ 3:56PM

Guess I changed my mind once I heard free. I upgraded. Now my computer is a total piece of shit. The buttons below on the taskbar barely work. The TV resolution won't go higher so the stuff on there is GIANT. Hopfully I can fix any of that.

Initial Thoughts (I’ve had maybe 2 hours total with my computer since Windows 10 installed): • Generally faster than 7 or 8
• Virtual Desktops are half-baked. There was a massive amount of feedback during the insider preview that was never addressed:
o No keyboard shortcuts to move windows/applications between virtual desktops.
o The actual transition between desktops is clunky and feels out of place.
• Chrome doesn’t match: start menu, taskbar, options panel have this nice translucent thing. Window chrome is flat opaque color.
o This was like the biggest single feedback item that wasn’t addressed.
• Edge:
o Lots of websites simply don’t work in Edge. This might be a matter of cross-browser libraries (jQuery) trying to do IE hacks which aren’t necessary in Edge anymore.
o Honestly one of the best looking browsers. More “Chrome” than Chrome has become.
o No plugins yet. I *NEED* adblock and flashblock/flashcontrol to survive.
o Dev tools could use some work.
• Many Windows 8 problems remain
o Many universal apps are the lowest-common-denominator of the mobile versions (twitter, facebook) but this is likely a problem from the developers.
• Installation was quick and painless.
• Cortana isn’t half bad, actually, but definitely needs iteration and more polish.
• Some of the default apps are TERRIBLE:
o Music. You can’t sort by album title.
• Some classic windows problems:
o Settings are still a mess to navigate, but Cortana pretty much gets you to whatever you want easily- if there’s a setting for it.
o Some ancient controls that haven’t been updated since the days of 640x480 monitors, such as the native UI for managing environment variables.
• Lots of missed opportunities:
o No tabbed/split views for explorer.
o cmd.exe
• The sharing/streaming tools are AMAZING. You can share/stream/record almost anything. I recorded a quick LFR last night.
o Definitely not as robust as other streaming tools, dunno how to do overlays, hide content, etc yet.
• Streaming Xbox is a nice gimmick, but I’d rather just play the games on my PC, plugged into my monitor, with the wireless Xbox One controller.

Generally positive. This is definitely an improvement in the true unbroken line of Windows kings: Window 98, Windows XP, Windows 7.

New Computer
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 15th, 2014 @ 1:40AM
  • 12/14 - I got a GTX 790 from a good friend. I got a 1600W power supply too. The thing is nuts. It has a carrying case for the cords. I spent the last couple of days getting the things switched to the new case and lining up the cords all nice. Momette was especially excited to get to move to my old computer which is pretty decent with a GTX 690 in it.
  • 12/2 - Ug, my computer doesn't like the power supply with the video card. It kept resetting whenever I was playing a movie and wow, or even just wow. So I might have to swap power supplies. :( I switched back down a level of video card and it seems to be more stable.
  • 12/1 - Had one incident where the new computer rebooted during a movie + wow going at the same time. I hope that doesn't keep happening. 32 GB Ram. SSD is the best. On the old/2nd computer. I need to find a cable to adapt the (2) 6 pin video card power connector. I also am waiting on a 2nd SSD for that comp I got for only $49.
  • 11/25 - Put my computer together. I had a bitch of a time with the coolmaster CPU heat sink but got it on there finally. Then for the first time it actually worked the first time. So Yay.
  • 11/25 - Got my parts but I don't have time to put them together

From Work List, $350 power computer
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on December 12th, 2014 @ 12:10PM
I am putting together a PC for my son and decided to go with the most maximum value box I could get, that was still an acceptable gaming PC. My price point was the extremely reduced cost of the Xbox One at $350 with no monitor. So, can you build a gaming PC for less than an enthusiast video card?

ASRock H97 Anniversary - $69.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157547

Intel Pentium G3258 3.2Ghz Overclocked to 4.2Ghz: $59.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/435187/G3258_32_GHz_LGA1150_Boxed_Processor

G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB): $42.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

Gigabyte GTX 750 2GB Overclocked to the maximum: $89.99 (after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125510

Silicon Power 120GB SSD: $54.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/439432/Slim_S60_120GB_Sata_III_6Gb-s_25_Internal_Solid_State_Drive_(SSD)_SP120GBSS3S60S25

DiabloTek Case: $29.99 http://www.microcenter.com/product/356585/Diamond_ATX_Mid_Tower_Computer_Case_with_400W_Power_Supply

Total Price: $347.94

I decided to do one minor upgrade of the RAM to 8GB because there was a $14 off deal for RAM I really like. This pushed the price up by $28. This shouldn’t have affected my benchmarks by much.

Both the CPU and GPU overclock very well, and I was able to hit 4.2Ghz and the maximum 750 overclock without any fuss on stock coolers. There’s a ton of headroom on these chips, no need to go crazy with the coolers.

BENCHMARKS:

Unreal Engine Heaven Benchmark – Direct3D 11, 1920x1080, Quality Ultra, Tessellation Disabled, Anti Aliasing Disabled FPS: 40.4 Score: 1017

Windows 7 Experience Index (Best score possible 7.9): Processor: 7.3 RAM: 7.7 Graphics: 7.7 Gaming: 7.7 Disk: 7.9

7-Zip Benchmark: Average MIPS per core: 4556 Average MIPS total: 8969

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Benchmark: 301 Marks 87C!!! (This is a bit too hot, I might have to back down to 4.0Ghz on the stock heatsink... )

Still installing our games to get some average FPS.

There's no warning heat sound but there's 0 video on the screen now :( I tried using the old heat sink and no good either. It might be fried. :( :( :( (: I don't have $500 for a new computer either.

Anyone know how these connect? The metal rod is bent so weird it's almost like you have to rebend it to match up the 2 hooks. Here's the product: Amazon.

I cannot find any youtube videos or anything on google search to explain. There's no screw holes next to the chip to screw the heat sink in, so this hook set up is the only option. :(

I think you stick the rod through the middle hole of the heatsink and then pinch the rod to clip in place?
