I hit the motherload. So as you might remember (all 100 of you) that I found that whole european coin collection at the corner between a school and a park. I got to thinking, SCHOOL + PARK. So I tried a High School + Park and I came on an untouched area of SOLID COINS. Every inch of the damn place is coins. A layer of continual coins for as far as you can see.
So, normally the process is, DIG EVERYTHING. However there's 98 damn parks in my town + they're all trashy. So It would take you 10-20 years to dig everything probably. So instead i just have been focused on DIMES and QUARTERS. My detector (Garrett AT Pro) finds them like MAD. I'm an expert at it now. So day one I came up with $18.55 in coins. That's an insane number. My biggest dig spots before that was $40 at a corner in 3 years, and $30 in an apartment complex down the street in about 8 visits. But I dug that in 4 hours! So I headed back to the park instead of the high school side the next day and dug out $15! Also insane numbers. Typically I come home with $1-4 max. I'll even go all day and come home with only $3. There's still TONS left. I was trying to leave and I said, hey I'll just ONLY stop for quarters. And even that still had quarters the whole way.
The quarters are adding up. I'm up to $240 + in 3 years. But of course I have about $1,000 in gear. So as someone originally posted, you'll always come out behind. But if you DO find GOLD, a few gold rings can pay off everything.
The problem is, the gold is hard to find. It rings up as 50-60 or so on the VDI (number display on your detector) which it shares with PULL TABS off cans, NICKLES and stupid shit like foil and ripped up cans. So if you want gold you have to dig TONS of trash. People have giant tubs of trash on the pro channels. But I'm soooo lazy. I like digging a sure thing. So I'm starting to do things like OK I'll dig like 10-20 crap targets. Or I'm trying things like first I'll get all the quarters, dimes, and pre 1982 pennies. THEN I'll dig the trash. Sometimes I never go back for the trash though. I just LOVE digging quarters.
So I just need to stick with a location and dig it all out before going on because i'm probably just leaving shit for other people
But I seem to be the only park digger. Everyone digs the sand lots and the beach but people are too lazy to dig the park/grass. It's work. I do best with my psycho $120 shovel but it scares the shit out of people and I'm afraid of the cops so I only whip it out at night. haha. Because I'm the only park digger, the whole place seems to be open to me for finds.
What sucks though is the absolute best finds are at the beach but to do it, you have to live there, and be out there at 5am or 10pm. Impossible. That's where you find the jewelry/rings.
Also, the west coast BLOWS for finds. You have to live in certain OLD areas. In Orange County it's all paved over. There was a map to study on old locations and every one of them was covered with a newer building. If you're in northern california or san fran area it's probably good or certain parts of LA or San Fran.
People seem to find good places when they get "permissions" which involves asking the people who live there permission to dig but I'm so shy, I don't think I can ever do that.
Update: What's awesome about this, besides the beach, there's no rush. You can come back a week or a month later, or years later. It will still be there. I like that. I can plan when I'll get it around my schedule.
