Commenting Dead
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on May 29th, 2015 @ 7:55AM

Update: 3 of you got your accounts back. Also messaged Aridin about the password form. No response yet. He's got kid(s) now.

Pretty much no one comments anymore. I'm not sure if it's because of less viewers, or everyone forgot their accounts, or if the posts aren't sticking around enough.

If you've lost your account or access to it, let me know and the password you'd like.

I just never think to comment. I subscribe to the site via RSS. The links I click on for a post in the RSS feed always take me to a page that doesn`t exist.

those huge lists like "tuesday random" news are not very motivating to post.

rather a few segmented topics than this huge wall of text with a single comment option.

the huge multipost topics are the worst for getting a convo going.

person A says something then person B says something else and both are related to a different link in the wall of 20+ links and you try to find what either of them are talking about and if they are related or not. and if they're not related then you can get like 2-3 topics going in a convo.

or one link dominates the comments and you have some really good links that can't get a comment cause they're lost in the mix

I saw this post and was like "yeah, that sounds about right, no need to comment -- oh wait".

Same thoughts on the big wall posts. They're cool, but comments don't work out well. Also, subscribing to threads is a little cumbersome and the replies often go to Spam because the reply email is not set to the site, so I hesitate.

Multipost topics aside, I think Charkoth pretty much sums it up. The truly polarizing topics are few and far between. And even then, the most outspoken among us have over the years become more moderate/centrist or apathetic/disillusioned in our world views, especially where politics is concerned. That, and it's rare that something divisive comes up that hasn't already been discussed in the past.

Although I've had plenty of less charged conversations here over the years, yeah, the big political debates probably were my bread and butter. Nowadays, I almost never debate politics on the internet. I'm still opinionated and all that. I just don't really get into it like the old days.

I mean.. when I started here, I was a college student. Now I'm 30 and getting married.

I`ve been coming here almost daily for the last seven-eight years but have never commented. So here you go. I`ll just second what everyone else is saying about the multi-post topics. They work for just random news, but when something big comes out like the NSA surveillance program taking a hit, or when SCOTUS comes back on gay marriage, singular topic posts would be best.

Cheers.

Beaten down by the anti-cop stuff on the site, especially given numerous close friends and familiy in law enforcement. So fewer visits, and thus, fewer comments from me....

RE: Anti Cop. Cops have personally cost me, $2,000 as the thread said and ruined my life. I DID NOTHING WRONG. I was sorta anti cop before that happened, now I'm EXTREMELY anti cop abuse. Look around and you can see it's a huge topic in America as cops are killing more people than the wars. There's just about 0 accountability. Even Obama is trying to get body cams on them. Even when they murder citizens, they get away with it most of the time. So I myself have law enforcement friends, but it's not changing the facts.

Most of the comments on this site came from politically charged topics and those just haven't been that frequent lately. Plus I stopped stirring the pot as I gave up on politics. I'm sure we've had several others drift off as well.

A lot of the links here are taken from reddit so by the time I get here I've already read them all and the commentary that went along with them. So I don't have anything to say at that point.

Also, you aren't as politically charged as you used to be. No things to debate = no discussion.

I still enjoy the links as well as the few comments that people make. I come here a few times a day,

I'd guess that most folks here are between 35-45. Our lives have gotten way busier in the last 20 years. Personally, I don't have much time to formulate well thought out comments...and I'm not changing anyone's mind about anything anyway.

Just logged in for the first time in I don't know when. I check this site multiple times per day and read everything, but Charkoth pretty much nailed it. I just don't care enough about internet arguments any more. We aren't idealistic youths any more, we're jaded old men.

I get tired of the anti-cop posts, it's redundant. At what point do you decide you've got your moneys worth? The majority of cops are good, it's the bad ones that make the news. Bad cops sell papers, that's why the media is just looking for stories to blow up. I skip your anti-cop threads altogether and won't even comment.

As for other stuff, I am a lurker more than anything. I get some good material for facebook - my personal profile is basically a joke page for my nearly 2000 friends. Keep posting funny stuff :)

My participation on online forums lately has shifted to Reddit (for games) and boardgamegeek.com. Also, as others have said, the multi-topic posts are great for digesting information but not ideal for sparking dialogue.

For those having issues with the lost password form, be sure to check your spam folders when submitting the request. I believe the anonymous sendto address targets it as a spam email.

I try and comment from time to time. I don't think I could add to the reasoning, as many points people bring up are good ones. I would like to see what more people thought about china building islands in the South East Asian sea. Personally think that it has huge potential to devolve into a global conflict, but i'd be interested in seeing what people who are pro-china thought. Do we even have any Chinese nationals reading this site?

Besides, $2000 is a small price to pay for security. Consider it a $2000 donation to all the GOOD cops who risk their lives fighting all those people in the ghetto surrounding your middle class lifestyle.

If you're going to fight battles, pick something better than cops. Vilify cops and who do we have left? Vilify the military and who do we have left?

How is Nebu picking on cops when he simply shares stories of them committing crimes? That stuff should be public knowledge. I am glad that cameras are more prevalent and the courts have sided with people filming cops. Injustice wherever it is should be dealt with.

Of course people have a duty to be good citizens. I think that this administration (especially in the fights the DOJ is choosing to get involved in) is promoting a level of rebellion above civil disobedience, and it is boiling over in places.

it's embarrassing to see the amount of 'most cops are good so you shouldn't talk about the bad ones so much' posts there are here

nebu shouldn't have to post about these things and we shouldn't have to talk about them, because the GOOD cops should be dealing with this shit, but they don't.

Never said we shouldn't talk about the bad ones, but the tone of posts comes off as bashing vs discussion. I've always been one to bash cops my entire life until I finally thought about it and realized that it's silly to bad mouth all cops for the actions of a few. It's absolutely no different than hating all black people because of thug blacks.

Should we point out corruption and work to fix it? Absolutely. Should we see corruption and then say "look, SEE, cops are pieces of shit"? No. Where are the posts discussing stories about good cops? Where are the posts discussing good military people?

The lack of balance on the specific subject of cops is what causes people like myself (and a few others) to basically glaze over and be like "oh, cool, another cop bashing article". The corruption articles are OBVIOUSLY something that is interesting. More often than not it's something along the lines of the following: "cop accused of X .... he must be burned that piece of shit ... cops are such SCUM! LETS RIOT EVERYONE!"

I get enough of the pitchfork mentality in everyday life. When I see it happen on a site I've been visiting for 12+ years, it causes some glaze. Luckily there's plenty of stuff posted here that interests me enough to visit multiple times per day. I just skip the stuff I consider moan-worthy.

More of a healthy skepticism and insight or balance would be welcomed vs a laser focus on negative cop press.
