Beheading videos: Why we should boycott Facebook
Posted by: Nebuchadnezzar on October 23rd, 2013 @ 8:25AM

DailyMail

WTF SEriously.

"Facebook had introduced a temporary ban on footage of beheadings in May, following complaints that such terrible videos could cause long-term psychological damage. But yesterday, provoking a storm of protest, the U.S. firm said it now believed its users should be free to "watch and condemn" such atrocities."

Of all the reasons we should be boycotting Facebook, this still wouldn't make my top 10 =(.

Seriously: Facebook demonstrates in full context what people feel about their right to privacy =(.

Oh stop, people have been warned and warned and warned so many times. Every time there's a new privacy feature there are popups to tell people. Privacy is what you make it, if you don't go through the effort then you only have yourself to blame. Besides, Facebook isn't nearly as accurate as people want to make it sound: everyone curates their lives before posting.

And wait.. Are we boycotting it because it's censoring stuff or are we boycotting because it's not censoring?

Oh wait, the DailyMail is a useless rag:

But I shudder to think how quickly I came to the heart of darkness in cyberspace. I am shocked to discover how easy it is to propagate footage of murder to what could, in theory, be 500 million people — the estimated number of daily Facebook users.

I dread to think, also, how easy it is for someone who wants to publicise the activities of jihadists to put such content on their Facebook page, thereby giving extremists the publicity they so hunger for.

When I searched for the material on Facebook yesterday, I couldn’t find it.

Just fear-mongering. This person's surprised that there is a feature that let's folks quickly post content to their Facebook timeline?? STOP THE PRESSES!

Rag might be too nice a term, actually.

I saw the video of the decapitation of Berg in Iraq in '04. If there's one thing it cemented in my mind, it's that moral relativism is BS. "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" is total crap.

There is evil in the world, and I have no regrets in the role I play in trying to stomp it out.

I deleted my Facebook account a few weeks ago after I realized that I have little in common with the people who frequent it. I would read people's mundane posts for hours and wonder why afterwards. I tried rationalizing keeping it as Facebook was how I kept in touch with family and long lost friends but then I asked myself: "Do you really have interest in interacting with any of these people outside of a social internet medium?". The answer was no and I'm actually happy I quit. For whatever psychological reasons Facebook IS addictive and there was a good week of 'withdraws' I experienced before I stopped desiring to log onto it.

Like Charkoth, I too got rid of my account. I downloaded all the pictures, just to make sure I had copies of them, and I removed my account.

Over the months leading up to it, I chopped my friends down from 300+ to 80. Then to 40 and finally to 3. The reason I got down to 3 was because of one friend, my wife, and one of my daughters. Each time I got rid of people, I would get e-mails from butt hurt people. It was pretty sad to see people get so hurt over that.

Now that I am done with it, I feel so much better. I laugh at people that are so tied to it. They feel they must know what is going on with others all the time. Honestly, I realize now how much I don't care what others are up to. Being 44, I remember the days when no one had mobile phones and weren't connected 24/7. Being in IT and on-call 24/7, I really miss those days.

I digress.

For the people that complain about something yet still use it. You are an idiot (play that sample that Nebu used to have on his site, I would link it if I had it). Hate what Facebook does, or dislike their privacy issues, stop using them. This goes for anything. Whine about Star Wars, stop buying the DVDs and BluRays. If you think Tom Cruise is a nutjob, stop going to see his movies.

You people drive me insane.

I like Facebook. I enjoy having my account and has enabled me to get in touch and maintain contact with old friends. Hell, it's the sole reason I've been able to find places to live in SF for the last 2 months and change.

Absolutely agree. It's like people have become completely disconnected to how purchasing content typically earns the creator money.

I personally also loathe people that think they're taking some moral stand when not purchasing media, but then pirate it anyway. Do people not understand how arrogant and entitled that makes them look??
